FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): At least 10 people have been killed and hundreds of acres of agricultural land damaged as a result of heavy rains and floods in 12 provinces of Afghanistan, an official said on Sunday.
In Badakhshan province, said rainfall in Raghistan, Kohistan, Yawan, Yaftal Payan, Shahr-i-Buzarag, Yaftal Bala, Arghanjkhwa, Baharak, Argo, Darem, Kishm and Shuhada districts triggered floods over the past four days.
Syed Abdullah Humayun Dehqan, head of the Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for the province, said the floods had damaged hundreds of acres of agriculture lands and some irrigation canals.
“NDMA has dispatched teams to the affected areas to survey the losses and provide accurate information to the higher-ups,” he said, adding four people including women and children had been killed.
Several homes and farmlands were also damaged by the natural disaster in a number of provinces, Dehqan said.
The family of each victim was provided with 50,000 afghanis. Food items including flour, rice, cooking oil and salt were distributed to 104 families.
