Security situation in Afghanistan still volatile: US

WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): Amidst an uptick in terrorist attacks, the United States on Tuesday said the security situation in Afghanistan remained volatile, as it reiterated an unwavering commitment to the country.

“The Taliban announced another campaign of senseless violence last month targeting the democratically elected and internationally recognised Afghan government and their fellow Afghans,” a State Department spokesperson told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Responding to a question on the recent spike in terrorist attacks, the spokesperson said it was important to look beyond individual assaults. He noted Afghan security forces had defended strategic territory and prevented the long-term capture of any provincial capital.

“Our commitment to Afghanistan is unwavering. The United States and the international community will continue to stand with the government and people of Afghanistan as they work towards peace,” the spokesperson said.

“For information on military operations, we refer you to the Afghan Ministry of Defense and the Department of Defense,” the spokesperson said, when asked what measures were being taken to control the situation.
