New Kunar governor to focus on security, reconstruction

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): The newly-appointed governor for eastern Kunar province on Thursday took charge, promising focus on balanced reconstruction and development besides improving security

Abdul Sattar Mirzakwal, who was appointed as the Kunar governor following a presidential decree, was introduced to local residents on Thursday.

During his introduction ceremony, Mirzakwal said he would be personally in touch with the people and would accept advises from tribal elders and Islamic scholars for improving governance in the province.

He said he would assess the performance of both civil and military organs and strengthen coordination between security institutes as well as supplying border forces with equipment on time.

“All civil institutes are responsible to present their quarterly reports to the governor’s house,” he said, promising to protect national assets and not to allow anyone to grab lands, do corruption or violate the law.

Mirzakwal sough public cooperation for making his plans a success for the sake of development of the province.

Kunar tribal elders, Islamic scholars, civil society activists and public representatives asked the new governor to enforce the country’s laws in the province and serve its people based on those laws.

Mualvi Najibullah Haqyar, an Islamic scholar, asked the governor to maintain good relations with scholars and all other Kunar people and improve security situation of the province.

Walayat Khan, the provincial council head, assured that the masses would cooperate with him but said the provincial council would press the governor if he failed to serve Kunar people well.

Mirzakwal became ninth governor taking charge of Kunar province during the last 17 years.
