List of prospective candidates in 3 days: IEC

KABUL and district council elections three days later.

Sayed Hafizullah Hashemi, a member of the IEC, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the commission was trying to announce the candidate list on schedule on Thursday, June 28.

He said late arrival of the list of candidates from six provinces to the IEC’s main office was a problem the commission faced, but it would try hard to announce the list on schedule.

“The list of possible candidates from six provinces has reached Kabul airport but is yet to reach the IEC office,” Hashemi added.

He did not name the provinces but asked the government to cooperate with the IEC on the issue.

More than 10,031 people have obtained forms to register as candidates in the upcoming elections and 6,185 of the forms have been filled and returned to the IEC office.

Hashemi said 2,445 of those filling the forms wanted to contest Wolesi Jirga polls and 3,731 others district council elections.

After reviewing these forms and relevant documents, the IEC would announce the final list of candidates on Thursday, June 28, he said.

According to the IEC, more than seven million people have so far registered as voters across the country.

The Wolesi Jirga and district council elections are scheduled for October 20.
