QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday traveled to northwestern Badghis province and inaugurated a power sub-station benefiting 7,000 families, Presidential Palace said.
The president inaugurated the project importing electricity from Turkmenistan in the presence of tribal elders and senior officials, a Turkmen minister and the ambassador of the neighbouring country.
Officials say the substation has the capacity of supplying 16 megawatts of power and involves a 25 kilometres 110kv transmission line, as well as a distribution network for 7,000 families.
During the inauguration ceremony, the president hoped the project would be expanded and other residents of the province would also benefit from the facility.
Residents of Qala-i-Naw are currently supplied electricity from a generator at a rate of 46 afghanis per KV. But the president said they would use the same amount of power for six afghansi only.
Ghani added the construction of a ring road in Badghis was also among his promises. The road was being constructed, he continued.
The Turkmen minister of energy emphasised greater relations between the two countries. He was pleased to note that resident of Qala-i-Naw were benefiting from imported electricity.
Heading a high-level delegation, the president reached the provincial capital to inaugurate a power sub-station and its distribution network.
Ghani would also hold separate meetings with tribal elders, religious scholars, school and university teachers, civil society representatives and provincial council members.
