KABUL (Pajhwok): Inclusive Afghan-led and Afghan-owned political negotiations can lead to peace and reconciliation in the war-devastated country, believes a top Pakistani diplomat.
Ambassador Zahid Nasrullah Khan made the remarks while addressing a function marking the 71st Independence Day of his country at the Pakistan embassy in Kabul on Tuesday night.
More than 300 guests, including Afghan ministers and Kabul-based ambassadors, attended the event. Khan hailed educated youth and women as the main drivers of Pakistan’s economy and guarantors of its stability.
About the inaugural meeting of the Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity (APAPPS) on July 22, he said Islamabad believed only Afghan-led talks could bring peace and reconciliation to the conflict-wrecked nation.
APAPP had opened a new chapter of cooperation and friendship between the neighbours, he said, adding Pakistan had been fully supporting President Ashraf Ghani's peace initiative.
Chief guest Mohammad Mohaqiq, deputy chief executive, expressed his heartiest congratulations to Pakistan on its 71st independence anniversary.
He commended Pakistan’s support for the jihad in Afghanistan, hosting more than 1.3 million refugees and granted Afghan students thousands of scholarships.
He also praised Pakistan-funded socio-economic projects worth $500 million in different provinces of Afghanistan. Mohaqiq congratulated Pakistan on holding successful elections.
During a flag-hoisting ceremony, messages of the president and the prime minister were read out.
