LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): At least 10 people were killed and nearly 100 others wounded in traffic accidents during Eidul Adha holidays in southern Helmand province, local officials said Saturday.
Dr. Ahmadzia Hayat, head of the Bust Hospital in Helmand, told Pajhwok Afghan News that casualties from traffic accidents happened during the first four days of Eid.
Most of the injured were youth who sustained injuries in accidents involving motorcycles. Women and children were among in the dead and injured.
Hayat said most of the injured were discharged after treatment and currently only a small number of the wounded were under treatment in the hospital.
Abdul Jabbar, one the injured, said he was injured in a motorcycle accident on the second day of Eid.
Noor Ahmad, another injured man, told Pajhwok that he was injured after being hit by a motorcycle in Nawa district on Friday.
Helmand Traffic Department head, Mirza Khan Rohani, said that the number of traffic accidents had declined compared to the last year when 150 accidents happened.
He said some people coming from remote areas or districts to cities did not know traffic rules --- a reason behind accidents during Eid days.
