MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Taliban militants have captured two security check-posts in the Chahar Bolak district of northern Balkh province, officials said on Saturday.

The provincial council chief also confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News that the insurgents had seized some areas of the district. He added the Balkh-Jawzjan highway had become insecure.

The provincial police headquarters also verified renewed insurgent activity in the district. A clearing operation had been launched in Chahar Bolak, it said.

Haji Karim Bai, a resident of the Ali Abad village of the district, said two check-posts in the area were overrun by the Taliban on Friday night.

Meanwhile, a security official confided to Pajhwok two checkpoints and six villages of the district had been captured by the militants over the past two days.

Timorak, Aliabad, Dobial and Sektazan had fallen to the guerrillas, the source said, adding three policemen and two Afghan Local Police personnel had been killed in two days.

Provincial Council’s Chairman Mohammad Afzal Hadid said the situation was having a negative effect on Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital. He urged the security forces to take measures to control the situation as soon as possible.
