JALALABAD (Pajhwok): More than 20 Taliban insurgents were killed in a special operation and in an airstrike in Khogyani district of eastern Nangarhar province within 24 hours, an official said Monday.
Attaullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the National Directorate of Security (NDS) personnel conducted the ground raid in Fatha Kahrkai area of the district.
Taliban’s shadow district chief for Pachirawgam district Mullah Mahmood known as Iftikhar was killed along with 12 other militants, he said, adding two machineguns, two rockets, five Kalashnikovs and several hand-grenades were seized by the security forces.
Separately, nine militants were killed in a foreign forces airstrike on the outskirts of Khogyani district, said a spokesman for the 201st Selab Military Corps.
Maj. Mohammad Haroon Yousafzai told Pajhwok that two machineguns, two rockets, five Kalashnikovs belonging to rebels were also destroyed during the airstrike.
He added security forces and civilians suffered no casualties during the airstrike.
On the other hand, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed the fighters targeted a convoy of special forces in Fatha Karkhi area of Khogyani district.
He said 11 security personnel were killed and several others were wounded and confirmed five rebel casualties only.
