LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A new polio case has been detected in the Nawzad district of southern Helmand province, an official said on Thursday.
Dr. Hekmatullah Himmat, immunization in charge at the Helmand public health department, said the polio virus was found in a two-year-old girl in Ghurguri area of the district.
In the past two months, it was a second polio case to be detected in Helmand province.
According to Himmat, the Taliban have not been allowing polio vaccination over the past seven months, thus such cases are on the increase.
At least 250,000 children have been administered polio drops of the total 750,000 children in the war-hit province.
According to the Public Health Ministry, 19 polio cases have been registered throughout the country this year.
