Hours on, Kabul market fire continues to burn

KABUL (Pajhwok): A fire broke out at a marketplace in central capital Kabul on Thursday evening and could not be doused until Friday morning, an official said.

The blaze erupted at Khairkhwa market in Nader Pashtun Kot at 6: 08pm Thursday and continued to burn as of 7:30 Friday, said Kabul fire department head Col. Amir Shah.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News 15 fire-fighting vehicles had been sent to the area to extinguish the fire.

He said what caused the fire was still unknown.

Residents said the massive blaze destroyed hundreds of stores the market and still smoldering. More than 600 businesses were destroyed in the blaze.

There were no reported injuries in the blaze that began when most of the stores selling electronics and household appliances were closed.
