5,000 deserving families in Kandahar receive food aid

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): The distribution process of food aid to 5,000 families affected by poverty has been started in districts and capital of southern Kandahar province, an official said Sunday.

The aid is provided by the World Food Program (WFP).

The distribution process of the aid begin by deputy Kandahar governor, Abdul Hanan Munib in presence of economy and refugees and repatriation directors, and head of provincial natural disaster management authority on Sunday morning.

Munib told Pajhwok Afghan News that the aid distribution was begun for 5,000 families in Kandahar today.

He said a survey was completed before the relief program as 2,000 needy families in Kandahar city and 3,000 families in districts of the province identified.

Each family would receive 150 kilograms of flour, 13 kilograms oil and 15 kilograms of pulses, he said, adding the drought and insecurity have affected many people and they needed assistance.

Mohammad Gul, an elder man who received the aid, said that they were forced to displace from Shah Walikot district to Kandahar city, but they did not have a good life there too due to economic problems.

The caretaker for a seven-member family, he said that he could not find a job and was in need of people’s help.

He said the aid would meet his family needs for a period of time but stressed such programs should continue.

Besides armed violence, drought is another factor that increased the number of people suffering from economic problems in Kandahar.

Kandahar officials say that they would try to deal with the drought and attract more aid for needy families in Kandahar.
