Takhar: Illegal commander surrenders after long siege

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Local security officials on Sunday said notorious illegal militia commander in northern Takhar province, Nawidak, surrendered to Afghan forces without resistance after a long siege.

The illegal commander and his fighters were besieged for two days by security forces inside a hospital in Taloqan, the capital of Takhar.

Acting Takhar police chief Gen. Abdul Rashid Rashid told Pajhwok Afghan News that Nawidak and his fighters surrendered to Afghan forces without any resistance on Saturday night.

“We handed over the commander and his fighters to Kunduz deputy police chief who then shifted them to Kunduz province,” he said.

Nawid aka commander Nawidak is a resident of Khanabad district of Kunduz province. He has the support of hundreds of illegal armed men. He has been active in Khanabad and some districts of Takhar province.

Previously, Matinak, another illegal commander in Khanabad district was arrested by Afghan forces and imprisoned.
