PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan as the only viable option to end the conflict in that country, says Prime Minister Imran Khan.
“A Solution to the Afghan imbroglio can be found only through political initiatives,” the prime minister said at a meeting with former US ambassador Cameron Munter on Tuesday.
Munter, who is now president of East-West Institute, called Pakistan an important country in the region and was critical to US national security objectives.
Also on Tuesday, senior US official Lisa Curtis began her visit to Pakistan with meetings. But US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad could not make it to Islamabad.
Currently on a swing through the region, Khalilzad has faced several unexpected changes in his itinerary. The ambassador is currently in Afghanistan.
“In her meetings with officials in Islamabad, Curtis urged Pakistan to help ensure an early resumption of engagement with the Taliban,” a well-placed source said.
In December, Pakistan facilitated a meeting between Khalilzad and Taliban representatives in Abu Dhabi. Saudi officials also attended the meeting.
