KABUL (Pajhwok): Amnesty International (AI) has called for a comprehensive probe into the killing of two journalists in northern Takhar province.
The journalists — Shafiq Aria and Rahimullah Rahmani — were shot dead by gunmen inside the studios of Radio Hamsada in Taloqan on Tuesday.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Provincial authorities say an investigation into the shooting is underway.
In a statement, Amnesty International’s South Asia Researcher Zaman Sultani asked the Afghan authorities to ensure thorough investigations.
“The perpetrators must be brought to justice through fair trials without recourse to death penalty,” Sultani stressed, denouncing the attack as a horrific crime.
He added the attack once again highlighted the risks journalists continued to face for just doing their job. The authorities must ensure safety and protection for all so they could work freely and without fear.
Last month, Afghan citizen journalist Jawid Noori was snatched from his car and murdered by the Taliban in western Farah province.
