JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Three civilians and as many Taliban) forces in Khogyani district of eastern Nangarhar province, officials said Monday.
Local officials said the operation was launched by a special unit of the NDS known as 02 Unit on Sunday night.
Governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani told Pajhwok Afghan News NDS forces launched the operation in Raeeskhel area of Khogyani district.
He said a Taliban commander Ziarat Gul aka Pahlawan was among three insurgents killed and a weapons depot was destroyed in the operation.
Insurgents who used civilian houses as their shelters fired on security forces but three noncombatants were killed in retaliatory action, he said, adding a fourth civilian was injured in the incident.
NDS forces also captured five suspected people over having links with insurgents, Khogyani added.
A resident of the area who wished to go unnamed said that two of the dead included elder men aged around 60 years and a third one was 12 years old boy.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid said three civilians were killed and five others were captured by Afghan forces during the operation.
Civilian casualties during Afghan forces operation have recently increased across the country. A number of civilians were killed or wounded in Hesarak district of Nangarhar and Badpakh district of Laghman in similar offensives few days back.
