‘Women’s presence in public sector reduces gender inequality’

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Officials in western Herat province say the outgoing solar year because more than eight females were appointed as directors of different departments.

Women’s Affairs Director Anesa Sarwar told Pajhwok Afghan News despite eight women’s appointment as directors in the province, still more females should be appointed.

She believed the presence of women employees in government offices could help decrease gender biasness.

Sarwari linked the appointment of the women to growing advocacy for women rights in the province.

Menhaz Peroz, director of the Open Publications Centre, said: “There is need for allotment of more than 30 percent of seats to women in government institutions.”

Fereshta Yaqubi, a women’s rights activist, said work carried out for women empowerment during the past 18 years was not enough.

Monasa Hassanzada, deputy head of social affairs department at the Governor’s House, said: “According to statistics, 10 percent women have been appointed to key government posts.”

She said the government’s commitment to increasing women’s presence in government sector was more than this.
