Wells, Ghani discuss presidential vote, peace drive

KABUL (Pajhwok): A senior State Department diplomat and President Ashraf Ghani have conferred on Kabul’s peace initiatives..

US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Alice Wells, who arrived in Kabul on Sunday, met President Ghani later in the day.

A presidential spokesman said Ghani and Wells reviewed the Afghan government’s push to promote the peace process.

Ongoing preparations for the presidential elections scheduled for September 28 also came under discussion at the overnight meeting.

The two leaders also held talks on US civilian assistance for reinforcing Afghan institutions and promoting the country’s self-reliance.

Besides participation in the opening of the US-Afghan Civilian Assistance Review, the visiting US diplomat would also meet CEO Dr Abdullah. 

Wells will meet stakeholders in the presidential vote and underscore US commitment to a transparent and efficient presidential elections process. 

She will also meet civil society leaders to hear their views on peace and reaffirm US support for a peaceful, stable Afghanistan
