Clash inside Pul-i-Charki prison leaves 4 dead, 30 wounded

KABUL (Pajhwok): Four prisoners were killed and 30 others, including 20 police guards, were wounded during a clash in the Pul-i-Charki prison east of Kabul on Tuesday, officials said.

Spokesman for prisons and detention centers department at the Ministry of Interior told reporters in Kabul on Tuesday afternoon that the clash erupted after some prisoners attacked anti-narcotics personnel and attorneys with woods and stones before noon.

He said to end the attack, police intervened and as a result, four prisoners were killed and more than 10 injured. Some 20 prison guards were also injured.

However, he did not say if police fired at the prisoners. He said the situation was now under control. The clash eruped during a search for drugs and other illegal subtances with prisoners.

MoI spokesman Nasrat Rahimi confirmed four prisoners had been killed and 13 others wounded in the incident that left 20 police guards wounded as well. He said police fired into the air to end the fighting, but the prisoners tried to get their weapons.

But some people said an armed clash took place inside the prison. A man, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, quoted his imprisoned maternal cousin as saying there was an armed clash in the prison.

Some Facebook users also said there was an armed clash at the Pul-i-Charki prison.

One user, Naik Mohammad Aqa, wrote on his Facebook wall at 4:45pm: “Firing  is underway in the Pul-i-Charkhi prison.”
