QALAT (Pajhwok): Security forces have repulsed a coordinated attack by Taliban militants in the Shamalzai district of southern Zabul province.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said several militants conducted the assault in the district late on Tuesday night.

It said the insurgents faced strong resistance from the security forces and suffered huge casualties. The attack was repulsed.

The MoD dispatched reinforcements to the district and the situation is currently under control.

Police chief Col. Mirajuddin Sadat told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants conducted a coordinated attack on Afghan National Army (ANA) base.

But the attack was beaten back by the security personnel and both sides suffered casualties.

He said the Afghan Air Force targeted a vehicle carrying four Taliban in Nawbahar district. All the militants onboard were killed.
