IS, Taliban activities up in Afghanistan: Russia

KABUL has tripled since 2016, says a top Russian military commander.

Similarly, Taliban’s activities in the war-torn country had also gone up by 30 percent in the current year, the commander of Russia's central military district claimed.

TASS news agency quoted Col. Gen. Alexander Lapin as saying on Wednesday that the situation in Afghanistan continued to deteriorate.

“The country may become a new refuge not only for IS, but also for other terrorist organisations, from where they will travel throughout the Eurasian continent," he warned.

At a meeting with defence industry officials, Lapin said: "In Afghanistan, the number of IS terrorists has increased threefold since 2016.”

Around 6,000 Daesh fighters were presently active in Afghanistan, compared to only 1,900 in 2016, the general added.

Lapin said: "We managed to prevent the escalation of the situation in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as ensure the maintenance of a favorable information situation for the District’s troops in the territory of these states."
