FIROZKOH (Pajhwok): Some public representatives and civil society province on Wednesday expressed their deep concern about shortage of female teachers and lack of buildings for girls’ schools in many parts of the province.
Mohammad Wazir Noorani, Ghor civil society alliance head, expressed his concern over poor education situation and said in most parts of the province girls were deprived of education due to security threats and several other issues.
He warned if these issues were not addressed, half of the province girls would grow up uneducated.
He said, “Some girls schools have long been closed due to security threats and girls have not been able to attend classes in Qara and Qasabat localities of the province.”
Abdul Hamid Nataqi, a member of the provincial council, told Pajhwok that in many districts and even in Firozkoh, the provincial capital, girls have been not able to attend schools widely.
He said the ongoing education situation for girls in the province was not acceptable for them.
He said, “The world has advanced much, but we are still struggling with hurdles in the way of girls education.”
Nataqi claimed statistics of girls’ presence in schools with the Education Department were far from truth.
Meanwhile, Women Affairs Director Halima Porstish said an oversight program showed girls’ education in Ghor was poor.
She said some families were not allowing their girls to attend school because of no buildings and security threats.
She said, “Due to shortage of female teachers and lack of buildings, parents are not willing to send their girls to schools.”
A less number of girls have been attending schools in only three districts of the province.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Sabir Noori, education director, confirmed security threats against school girls in many places but said the number of girls attending schools had increased compared to the previous years in the province.
Currently, 192,000 students, including 85,000 girls, are attending schools in Ghor, he said.
