Daesh in Afghanistan a serious threat: US

KABUL, the Islamic State, also known as Daesh, poses a big threat to the United States, a senior American general said Wednesday.

However, Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie said the militant outfit -- which was under strong military pressure --- would find it difficult to conduct an assault on the US homeland.

The Associated Press quoted the general as saying ISIS in Afghanistan certainly has aspirations to attack the United States. It is our clear judgment that as long as we maintain pressure on them it will be hard for them to do that.”

Speaking to journalists in Germany, McKenzie stopped at the Ramstein air base to refuel his airplane before returning from a multi-nation trip to his headquarters in Florida.

McKenzie, head of US Central Command who has been part of combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, believed the IS in Afghanistan had not grown in strength but stayed a big problem.

“They are very worrisome to us” he remarked, acknowledging that military operations had not cut the group’s fighting ranks.
