KABUL or lower house of parliament.
Mir Rahman Rahmani received 136 votes and was elected as speaker of the lower house while his rival candidate Khan Mohammad Wardak secured 96 votes.
Rahmani’s election as speaker of the house ended a month-long deadlock.
President Ghani felicitated Rahmani, a lawmaker from central Parwan province, on becoming the Wolesi Jirga speaker and hoped he would serve the Afghans to best his abilities.
The president also commended Wolesi Jirga members who participated in today’s successful election of the speaker. Ghani hoped the three pillars of the state --- the executive, legislator and judiciary --- would serve the nation and the country in light of the constitution and in cooperation with each other.
