KUNDUZ (Pajhwok): At least 14 policemen have been killed and 20 others captured as a result of a Taliban Sahib district of northern Kunduz province.
A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants stormed border and local police check-posts in Ferghan Tepa area on Saturday night.
He said 10 border police personnel and four local police members were killed and 20 others captured by the insurgents.
He added reinforcements had arrived in the area and launched an operation to secure the release of the 20 policemen from militants’ custody.
Mahbobullah Sayedi, the district’s administrative chief, confirmed the clash but said security forces suffered fewer casualties.
Without providing an exact number, he said both sides had suffered casualties.
Meanwhile, the Taliban confirmed the overnight attack. The group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted 19 policemen were killed, seven others wounded and 22 captured alive.
He claimed a tank was destroyed and a number of weapons and ammunition were seized by the rebels.
