IEC issues credential letters to 17 presidential hopefuls

KABUL) on Monday issued credential letters to 17 presidential candidates and their running mates while one candidate refused to take the letter. The presidential election is scheduled for September 28.

Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Nooruhaq Ulumi, Shaida Mohammad Abdali and Zalmai Rassoul of the 18 candidates were not present in the ceremony.

However, Ghulam Faroq Najrabi refused to take the credential letter and said, “We are not ready to take this fraudulent letter until peace is ensured, an interim government is formed and this useless electoral law is changed.”

Another candidate, Sayed Noorullah Jalili, took his credentials but did not stand for the national anthem. He did not explain why he did not stand for the anthem.

A number of candidates criticized the IEC and the president, but the commission’s head said they would organize a meeting in near future for hearing views of all the candidates.

Hawa Alam Nuristani told the ceremony that issuing credential letters to candidates was another step forward towards the election.

She said there had been many problems in the IEC in the past but the new commissioners were trying for resolve them. She promised the presidential election would be held with full transparency.
