LASHKARGAH/ PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): More than 50 Taliban militants have been killed and scores of others wounded during Afghan and foreign forces operations in southern Helmand and central Logar provinces, officials said on Thursday.

Helmand governor Mohammad Yaseen Khan told a press conference that security operations were conducted in Marja, Nad Ali, Greshk and Garamser districts following the decision of the military council.

About 37 militants were killed and several hideouts destroyed during the raids so far, he said, adding Taliban’s key figure for Marjah district Mullah Majahid was also among the dead.

A security man in Lashkargah City, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the operations were rapidly under way and they strived hard to avoid civilian casualties.

In Logar, 14 militants were killed, three others wounded and their two vehicles and four motorcycles were destroyed in foreign forces airstrikes in Bedak area of Pul-i-Alam and Baraki Barak district on Wednesday night, a military official told Pajhwok.

Ahmad Shakeel Tasal said Afghan and security forces jointly stepped up security operations to suppress militants.

Zahir, a resident of the area, said a home was struck in a airstrike in their village where militants were staying and some of them were killed.

The Taliban have so far said nothing about these operations.
