HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A staggering 660 cases of suicide attempts to claim their own lives mostly by women, local officials said Saturday.

The officials say 137 suicide attempt cases were registered during the last one month alone at the Herat Civil Hospital.

According Herat Zonal Hospital officials, 11 women of those who attempted suicide lost their lives during the last one month.

Dr. Mohammad Arif Jalali, head of the Zonal Hospital, talking to Pajhwok Afghan News, said, “Of all the suicide attempts registered over the last four months, 458 cases involved women while 202 men.”

He said four of the cases included self-immolation, three consuming poison and four self-hanging. Most of those attempting suicide were aged between 15 and 30 years, Jalali said.

A number of Herat residents expressed concern over the increasing suicide attempts, which they blamed on high unemployment rate and social problems.

Abdul Wasay, a resident of Herat city, the provincial capital, said, “Youths attempt suicide due to domestic problems, poor economy, domestic violence and underage marriages.”

However, Nasir Ahmad, another resident, said that economic problems, foreign cultural invasion and cultural poverty were factors behind suicide attempts.

Negative traditions in the society, forced marriages, unnecessary restrictions, lack of awareness, illiteracy, joblessness and poverty are said to be the major reasons why youths attempt suicide.

Meanwhile, Herat provincial council members asked the government to find ways to reduced suicide cases in the province.

Wakil Ahmad Karokhi, a provincial council member, said, “Unfortunately suicide cases have increased over the last few years due to joblessness, when youths graduate from universities they cannot find job.”

According to Hert Civil Hospital, 1,826 suicide cases were registered with the hospital during the entire last year.
