Crumbling heritage sites in Logar being repaired

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Ancient sites and tombs which are on the brink of destruction will be rehabilitated in central Logar province, an official said on Tuesday.

Information and Culture Director Abdul Rahman Tasal told Pajhwok Afghan News Logar was home to a large number of ancient places and tombs which got destroyed during the four-decade-old war, natural disasters and unprofessional digging.

He said, “In the past years no one worked to rehabilitate these heritage sites but now they have made a plan to reconstruct such ancient places in the province.”

Currently reconstruction works on Malak Sabz Ali tomb in the provincial capital, Pul-i-Alam, and on Abdul Qadir tomb in Baraki Barak district are underway, Tasal added.

He said both the tombs were 850 years old and their reconstruction would cost five million afghanis.

According to Tasal, Logar has 18 ancient places and tombs and their history dated back to early Islamic years.

Sayed Qaribullah Sadat, a member of the Provincial Council, said the government paid no attention to reconstruction of ancient places.

He said, “Most of our historical artifacts had been smuggled. Illegally extractions took place last year in Kafirkot area of Kharwar and Sajwand area of Baraki Barak district.”

On the other hand, police spokesman Shapour Ahmadzai told Pajhwok that most of historic places in the province were destroyed in natural disasters.
