Farah’s pomegranate yield up by 11pc this year

FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): The western Farah province has produced 145 metric tonnes of pomegranate this year –indicating an 11 percent increase over last year, an official said on Sunday.

Agriculture Director Abdul Manan Matin told Pajhwok Afghan News more than 8,284 hectares of land had been cultivated with pomegranates this year in Farah.

The province produced 145 metric tonnes of the fruit, he said, recalling that 130 metric tonnes of pomegranates had been collected from 7,840 hectares of land last year.

He added Farah’s pomegranates were transferred to markets in Herat, Nimroz, Helmand, Ghor.

Haji Gul Agha, owner of an orchard, expressed happiness over the increase in yield but said the price remained unchanged, showing no hike. One kilogram of ‘Sozhak’ pomegranate accounted 25 afghanis, he explained.

The grower urged the government to help them find a suitable market for their pomegranates. Others farmers are also happy with the pomegranate yield this year.
