Trump warns of targeting 52 Iranian sites

KABUL (Pajhwok): The US has identified 52 targets that it would hit if Iran launched revenge attacks on American interests, President Donald Trump has warned.

Both sides have spoken of Iran escalatory action after the killing of top Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in a US drone strike in Baghdad a week ago.

As the death of the Iranian commander was widely lamented, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed “tough revenge”, triggering fears in the region of heightened violence.

On Saturday night, President Donald Trump tweeted: “The US just spent Two Trillion Dollars on Military Equipment. We are the biggest and by far the BEST in the World!

“If Iran attacks an American base, or any American, we will be sending some of that brand new beautiful equipment their way…and without hesitation!” he wrote.

The US leader ordered 3,500 additional troops to the Middle East since an American contractor was killed in a rocket strike in Iraq. Washington instantly blamed the attack on Iran.

Trump wrote: “Iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain US assets as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader who had just killed an American...”

In his tweet, the US president said the number of targets matched the 52 American diplomats and citizens were held hostage for 444 days by Iran in 1979.
