Nangarhar: Govt urged to reconstruct Mughal era garden

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A number of residents on Wednesday urged the government to reconstruct the historic Mamli garden in Khogyani district of eastern Nangarhar province.

The Mamli garden is said to constructed by Mughal emperor King Shah Jehan’s daughter Mamli and son almost 500 years back and then used by successive kings as a sightseeing area.

The garden is situated in Mamli area of Khogyani district around 42 kilometers from Jalalabad City, the provincial capital. The garden spreads over 30 acres of land and has water and where different types of flowers grow.

Local residents say the district’s historic sites were recently cleared of armed men’s presence by security forces and local people.

Shafiqullah, a tribal elder and resident of the area, told Pajhwok Afghan News the garden was constructed by King Shah Jehan’s daughter and son almost 500 years back.

He said, “Our elderly persons tell us stories that the garden was constructed jointly by the area’s people and later different types of flowers were planted inside the garden.”

He said the garden was a vital history for Afghan new generation, saying the government should reconstruct the garden to attract tourists.

Hamidullah, another resident, said the area was recently turned into a stable place. He said the area has natural beauty and a large number of people visited the area each Friday.

He urged the government to pay attention to the garden’s reconstruction for domestic and foreign tourists.

Haji Wardak Shirzad, a national trader and tribal elder, termed rehabilitation of heritage sites important as it kept the nation’s history alive.

A number of other residents held similar views and urged the government to launch the garden’s reconstruction.

Attaullah Khogyani, the governor spokesman, said efforts were underway to launched reconstruction work on the garden in near future as the Presidential Palace had approved budget for its reconstruction.

He said the agriculture department should plant new trees inside the garden.
