KABUL (Pajhwok): The Pentagon has announced a drastic cut in the number of UH-60 Black Hawks it plans to deliver to the Afghan Air Force (AAF) from 159 to 53.
The Defense Department announced the cut in its December 2019 report. The UH-60 programme provides Afghan forces with troop and cargo transport and casualty evacuation.
The Military Times reported the number of fixed-wing AC-208 attack and reconnaissance aircraft the US originally planned to deliver to Afghanistan had been slashed from 32 to 10.
Meanwhile, Sputnik said the Pentagon might supply AAF CH-47 Chinook heavy-lifting choppers to replace its fleet of Russian-made helicopters.
The reductions were made on in light of a review of future operational requirements, the report said, adding the DoD planned to completely replace the AAF’s fleet of Russian-made Mi-17 transport helicopters with US-made CH-47s by 2023.
