SAR-I-PUL (Pajhwok): At least seven security personnel have been killed and three others wounded in a Taliban attack in northern Sar-i-Pul province, an official said on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Ghulam Jilani Abu Bakar told Pajhwok Afghan News the security forces came under Taliban ambush in the Golayee Takhta area of Sar-i-Pul City on Monday night.

He said six National Directorate of Security (NDS) personnel, including their commander Toofan, were killed and three others, including a Public Order Police commander, wounded in the clash.

Toofan had been a Taliban commander who surrendered to the government four years ago. Later on, he embarked on operations against the insurgents.

The police spokesman said the dead bodies and injured were evacuated to the civil hospital. He, however, was unaware of Taliban casualties in the overnight clash.

On the other hand, 209th Shaheen Military Corps spokesman Maj. Mohammad Hanif Rezaee said Toofan, a public uprising group commander, attacked a Taliban hideout in Takhta area on Monday night.

He said two notorious Taliban commanders named Abdul Haq — also known as Jaafar — and Obaida were killed along with nine associates and their hideouts was destroyed.

Rezaee added the security forces captured all ammunition from the militant hideout. The security forces suffered no casualties in the clash.

But Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi told Pajhwok the fighters stormed a convoy of the security forces last night in the Takhta area of Syedabad district.

He claimed Toofan was killed along with two other commanders — Khalild and Hafiz.

He said six security personnel, including commandos and public uprising members, were among the dead. Five others were wounded.

He also claimed capturing weapons and ammunition from the security personnel.
