Ashraf Ghani wins 2nd term as president

KABUL) on Tuesday announced Ashraf Ghani winner of presidential election by securing 50.64 percent of all votes in final result.

The presidential election was held on September 28. Based on initial results, Ashraf Ghani secured 50.64 percent of the votes while Dr. Abdullah Abdullah secured over 39 percent of total votes.

Hawa Alam Nuristani, IEC chief told a press conference here that Ashraf Ghani secured 923,592 votes or 50.64 percent of all votes, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah 720,841 (39.52 percent) of votes and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar 70,241 (3.85 percent) votes.

She said that other 15 presidential candidates won less votes compared to the mentioned three candidates.

The announcement came after the Independent Election Complaints Commission (IECC) responded to around 16,000 complaints.

Based on the IECC decision, 10 percent of 137,000 suspicious votes and 15 percent of 102,000 votes casted out of time special audited.

Nuristani said that they found they validated all 137,000 suspicious votes and 102,012 votes casted out of time during the audit process.

 In total, 1,823,984 votes are genuine, she said, adding that around 1.9 million people had participated in the presidential election.

Faridon Khwazon, spokesman for the Stability and Partnership election team lead by Dr. Abdullah Abdullah told Pajhwok Afghan News today that their team had withdrawn from the presidential race as the process had lost all its legitimacy. He said the final result would not be acceptable for the people.

He said that their team would announce its position about any result announced by the IEC and alternative options were on the table and would be soon shared with the people.
