Kabul to help Colombo combat drug trafficking

KABUL has pledged to assist Sri Lanka in countering drug trafficking in the South Asia region, the government said on Tuesday.

Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mohammad Ashraf Haidari held out the pledge at a meeting with Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Maj. Gen Kamal Gunaratne.

In a statement from the Afghan embassy, Haidari said: “Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have a lot to share and we could cooperate in a multitude of sectors. There is a real potential for enhancing our cultural relationship and promoting tourism.”

Gen. Gunaratne highlighted the possibility of bilateral cooperation, covering security and defence, business and investments and in building institutional capacity.

Dealing with challenges prompted by the surge of extremism and non-traditional security threats in the region were also discussed.
