Afghani rises by 2.7pc against US dollar

KABUL-US peace agreement, market sources said on Saturday.

Haji Mir Hussain Sadaqat, a moneychanger in Sara-i-Shahzada market, told Pajhwok Afghan News one US dollar accounted for 74.20afs, down by 2.7 percent. A thousand Pakistani rupees sold for 481afs.

He said the afghani had been rising in value against the dollar since the start of the reduction in violence week and before the sighing of the US-Taliban deal.

The two sides are all set to ink a long-awaited peace deal in Doha today. The deal will eventually lead to intra-Afghan talks and a ceasefire in the country.

Mohammad Samim, a wholesaler in Kabul’s Mandavi market, said the price of a 49-kilogram bag of Pakistani sugar dipped from 1,960afs to 1,950afs, the same quantity of Kazakh flour from 1,530afs to 1,500afs and a tin of 16 liters of ghee from 1,240afs to 1,220afs.

He added a 49kg bag of Pakistani rice cost 2,000afs, a kilogram of Indonesian green tea 300afs and the same quantity of African black tea 320afs -- the same rates as last week’s.

Ahmad Mustafa, who owns a grocery store in Taimani area, sold a 50-kg sack of Kazakh flour for 1,580afs, a 49-kg bag of sugar for 2,000afs, a 24-kg bag of Pakistani rice for 2,300afs, a 16-litre tin of ghee for 1,300afs, one-kg of Indonesian green tea for 320afs and the same amount of African black tea for 360afs -- higher than wholesale rates.

The price of gold also decreased, said Haji Fawad Salehzada, a jeweler in Timor Shahi neighbourhood. The price of one gram of Arabian gold fell from 3,300 afghanis to 3,100afs and the same quantity of the Russian variety from 2,800afs to 2,550afs.

The prices of fuel remained steady. Abdul Hadi, a worker at the Wazirabad Fuel Station, said one liter of both petrol and diesel cost 46afs, the same rate as last week’s.

Ahmad Javid, a liquefied gas seller in Taimani locality, put the price of one kilogram of the commodity at 55afs.
