Afghan political parties welcome US-Taliban accord

Afghan political parties welcome US-Taliban accord

The agreement was signed in Doha, the capital of Qatar, between US special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban’s political office head Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in presence of dozens of foreign ministers and representatives of international organizations.

Under the agreement, first war prisoners would be released and intra-Afghans would begin 10 days after the agreement signing and then in 14 months, all international forces would leave Afghanistan if the Taliban keep their promises and commitments.

Simultaneously with the agreement signing in Doha, the Pentagon and NATO chiefs appeared in a joint presser with President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul and reaffirmed their continued support for the Afghan national forces.

Jamiat-i-Islami Afghanistan led by Salahuddin Rabbani in a statement said they warmly welcome the peace agreement between the US and the Taliban. The party said the Taliban had committed to cutting ties with international terrorists as part of the deal.

The statement said the Jamiat-i-Islami has always insisted on talks for solution to the conflict and for this purpose, the party leader, late Burhanuddin Rabbani, laid down his life.

The Jamiat stressed the need for initiating a national dialogue on peace and asked all political parties to fully participate in the dialogue for reaching a just and durable peace.

Peace and Moderation electoral ticket, led by Hanif Atmar, welcomed the US-Taliban agreement as a key step forward towards peace. The team in a statement said they fully support the peace agreement. It also voiced support for the joint declaration of the Afghan government, NATO and the US in Kabul.

The electoral ticket said the government and political leaders should get together soon for making preparations for intra-Afghan talks after the US-Taliban accord because all-Afghan talks were the main real phase of the peace process.

The statement quoted Hanif Atmar as saying: “I once again call on the government and leaders of the two electoral teams take advantage of the historic opportunity and not let their election differences deprive the Afghans of this chance.”

Meanwhile, Gulbadin Hekmatyar-led Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA) also welcomed the US-Taliban accord and hoped both the sides would honor their respective pledges.

The HIA in a statement said the Afghans were hopeful that the US-Taliban agreement would pave the way for complete peace.

The HIA said it would support every step, understanding and agreement that could help end the war in the country and result into lasting peace and protect Afghanistan’s independence, Islamic system, stability and national sovereignty.

Similarly, Hezbi Wehdati Islami also called the US-Taliban agreement as a crucial progress and hoped the agreement would end the decades-old conflict in the country.

Several other political parties also welcomed the US-Taliban peace agreement and urged the two sides to honor their promises and commitments.
