Concerns about prisoner swap remain unanswered

KABUL have been refusing to respond to its questions and concerns about their prisoner swap plan.

The AIHRC statement comes a day after President Ashraf Ghani announced decreeing the release of Taliban prisoners during his inauguration ceremony.

On Monday, President Ghani said he would issue a decree about Taliban release on Tuesday.

In accordance with the US-Taliban peace pact, 5,000 Taliban prisoners should be released before the start of intra-Afghan talks.

The AIHRC said confidence building measures were necessary for peace talks but the body received no response to questions and concerns about the prisoners swap.

The statement termed the AIHEC chairperson’s meeting with US special envoy for Afghan peace Zalmay Khalilzad as productive but questions about various aspects of the prisoner exchange remained unanswered by all sides.

The commission would continue to advocate for rights of Afghans throughout the process and called on all sides to be accountable and transparent to the pubic regarding the peace process.
