KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): The residents of central Uruzgan and Southern Kandahar provinces on Tuesday said government has failed to protect and rehabilitate the vital Uruzgan-Kandahr highway and the situation remained deteriorated from the past three years.
They accused government officials over negligence and reminded that people had been tired of the situation and faced serious problems.
Concerned authorities, however, said that work on the Kandahar-Uruzgan highway often started and stopped due to the landmines planted by insurgents.
They said after the end of winter seasons work on the vital highway would be resumed.
Khairullah, a driver on the Kandahar-Uruzgan highway, said that government often started work on the highway but it was stopped.
He said people had been facing serious transportation problems as a result of the deteriorated condition of the highway but no authority tend to resolve this problem.
He said elders, women and children could not afford to travel on this highway but they have no other option.
Khairullah said that vehicle often incur technical faults on the way and patients often die on the highway.
Abdul Qodus, the resident of Shah Walikot district, acknowledged the deteriorated condition of the road and added it was insecure as well.
He said Taliban often come out on the highway, stop vehicles and bother common people. He asked the government to rehabilitate the highway and ensure its safety.
Kandahar Governor Spokesperson Baheer Ahmadi said last winter work on the road was stopped due to unfriendly conditions for work which will be resumed soon.
He, however, said the main reason why work on the highway could not finished and suffered delay was the Taliban threat and plantation of landmines by the group.
Mines detection took more time of security personnel and some time the entire day is lost to demining.
He said a coordination meeting between the two provinces recently took place and work on the highway would resume soon.
