KABUL (Pajhwok) The Saudi-led coalition fighting Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen has announced a two-week ceasefire in response to a UN call to battle the coronavirus pandemic.

The Middle East News reported the truce announced late on Wednesday could pave the way for the first direct peace talks between the warring parties in more than five years.

In a statement carried by Saudi Arabia’s official national news agency, Colonel Turki al-Malki, a spokesman for the Saudi military, said the ceasefire would last two weeks.

He added the ceasefire could be extended to pave the ground for all parties to “discuss proposals, steps and mechanisms for a lasting truce in Yemen … and to find a comprehensive political solution there.”
