KABUL (Pajhwok): Defying government’s quarantine orders, machine guns and rockets were fired in celebration at an engagement ceremony in a powerful family east of Kabul, residents complained on Saturday.
Local residents of the Pul-i-Charkhi said the government took no action because the engagement was of the brother of former and incumbent Wolesi Jirga Tarakhel, Mullah Mohammad Khan Ahmadi and Shah Wazir Trakhel.
The heavy celebratory firing comes amid government’s restrictions on mass gatherings and movement in several provinces to contain the spread of coronavirus.
Video clips available with Pajhwok Afghan News show that supporters of lawmakers celebrate the engagement with heavy gunfire from machine guns and rockets.
Hafta Gul Tarakhel, head of the Tarakhel Youth Council, on his Facebook page posted a video of the gun and rocket fire.
Mohammadullah Tabassum, a resident of the locality, said that last night heavy firing started all of a sudden and everyone terrified.
“First a single shot was fired and then heavy firing started and we though the local police station had been attacked,” he said.
Shah Wazir Trakhel, a lawmaker from the Kuchi tribe, said he came to know about the incident after watching video on Pajhwok Afghan News Facebook page.
“I don’t recognize the place and area where the incident has happened, if the individuals firing in the video belong to me, I will accept it,” he said.
Kabul police spokesperson Firdos Faramarz said police were investigating the incident.
