KABUL over the past 24 hours, taking the nation’s tally to 1,143, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said on Wednesday.
Dr. Wahidullah Mayar, spokesman for the ministry, told Pajhwok Afghan News the new cases had surfaced in Kabul, Herat, Ghazni, Kapisa, Nangarhar, Kunar, Parwan, Bamyan, Laghman, Paktia and Farah provinces.
Of the 51 new cases, the official said, 28 were detected in Kabul, six in Nangarhar, four in Kapisa, three each in Kunar and Herat, two in Ghazni and one each in Parwan, Bamyan, Laghman, Paktia and Farah.
Mayar added 40 individuals, including four doctors, had lost their lives to the virus, from which 166 Afghans have recovered so far.
Of the 1,143 cases in Afghanistan, 413 have been detected in Kabul, 337 in Herat, 108 in Kandahar, 55 in Balkh, 35 in Nimroz, 18 in Paktia and 22 in Nangarhar, 15 each in Laghman, Ghazni and Kunar.
Thirteen cases have been reported in Helmand and 12 each in Logar and Baghlan, eight each in Kunduz and Daikundi, seven in Takhar and six each in Samangan and Bamyan.
Five cases have been reported in Faryab, four in Maidan Wardak, three each in Zabul, Ghor and one each in Badakhshan, Sar-i-Pul, Jawzjan and Badghis.
Over 50 percent of Afghans contracting the coronavirus are youth while 33 percent of fatalities have been reported among the elderly people.
