Coronavirus: Afghanistan records highest single-day spike

KABUL on Sunday registered its highest single day increase in coronavirus cases with 235 new infections, taking the nation’s tally to 2,704, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said on Sunday.

Dr. WahidullahMayar, spokesman for the ministry, told a media briefing here that 85 Afghan citizens, including four doctors, had lost their lives to the pandemic while 345 Afghans had recovered so far.

The new cases surfaced in Kabul, Kandahar, Herat, Panjsher, Takhar, Nangarhar,  Samangan, Ghor, Baghlan, MaidanWardak, Badghis, Bamyan and Laghman, Sar-i-Pul, Parwan, Kunar, Helmand and Farah provinces.

He said so far 258 doctors and healthcare workers had infected with the coronavirus across the country.

He said 27 percent infected individuals were women and the rest were men and most of them were 30 to 39 years old.

Mayar asked people to pay greater attention to adopting preventive measures and practicing guidelines offered by the ministry. “There is no vaccine yet to cure the virus.”

The official said 63 of the fresh cases were detected in Kabul, 54 in Kandahar, 19 in Herat, 14 in Panjsher, 13 in Takhar, 12 in Nangarhar, 10 each in Samangan and Ghor, nine in Baghlan, seven in MaidanWardak, five each in Baghis, Bamyan and Laghman, three in Sar-i-Pul, two each in Parwan and Kunar and each one in Helmand and Farah.

Of the 2,704 cases in Afghanistan, 755 have been detected in Kabul, 541 in Herat, 368 in Kandahar, 191 in Balkh, 84 in Paktia, 69 in Nangarhar, 64 in Ghazni,  59 in Takhar, 56 in Baghlan, 52 in Nimroz, 44 each Logar and Laghman and 39 in Samangan, 38 in Panjsher, 37 in Kunduz, 32 Jawzjan and 26 in Helmand.

At least 23 each cases have been found in Baghis, Kunar and Ghor, 20 in MiadanWardak, 16 in Bamyan, 15 in Kapisa, 14 in Paktika, 13 in Farah, 10 each in Zabul and Sar-i-Pul, nine each in Daikundi, Faryab and Parwan, six in Khost, three in Uruzgan and two in Badakhshan.
