Ghani orders early repair of Dasht-i-Barchi hospital

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani paid a visit to the Dasht-i-Barchi maternity hospital and directed the authorities concerned to repair and equip the ward as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, at least 24 people, including women and newborns babies, were killed and 16 others wounded in a gun attack on the maternity hospital in Kabul.

The gunmen stormed the 100-bed hospital in Dashti Barchi area, where Doctors without Borders runs a maternity clinic, west of the capital at around 10am (Tuesday).

A video clip from the Presidential Palace received by Pajhwok Afghan News said that President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani paid visit to the maternity hospital late Wednesday night.

President Ghani said Afghanistan was a united nation and no Afghan was better or weak than another one. “Militants should not think they will divide us into several parts.”

He tasked authorities concerned to reconstruct and repair the hospital at the earliest possible and ordered the Ministry of Public Health to provide all needy equipment to the hospital.

The president thanked and appreciated workers of the hospital and awarded them with cash assistance.

President Ghani also visited the Ataturk hospital where a number of newborns babies from the maternity ward’s victims were under treatment.

He said, “The difference between us and terrorists is that the government invests on new generations and they are destroying the future of our children.”

Also on Tuesday evening, in the aftermath of recent terrorist attacks in the country, President Ashraf Ghani directed security forces to switch to offensive posture from defensive.
