KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations, standing in solidarity with the Afghan people and government, has renewed its commitment to supporting an Afghan-led peace process that will end the conflict.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the horrific attack on a hospital in Kabul, which killed and wounded dozens of people, including women and babies.

In a statement, he said he was following with concern the escalation of violence in Afghanistan.  Recent attacks have claimed scores of lives in Balkh, Khost and Nangarhar, he noted.

Guterres expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Afghanistan, saying attacks on civilians were unacceptable.

Hospitals, medical facilities and personnel had special protection under international humanitarian law, he said, stressing perpetrators of such crimes must be held accountable.
