Ghani, Khalilzad stress over ceasefire, RiV ahead of intra-Afghan talks

KABUL Reconciliation Process Zalmay Khalilzad has held a meeting with President Ashraf Ghani and discussed peace process and ceasefire ahead of intra-Afghan talks, a statement from Presidential Palace said on Wednesday.

Khalilzad landed on Wednesday afternoon for discussion regarding recent development on peace process, the statement said.

First and second vice presidents, national security advisor, presidential advisor on trade and economic affairs were president during the meeting. Both sides discussed future peace process steps and stressed over ceasefire and Reduction in Violence (RiV) before the launch of intra-Afghan talks.

According to the source Khalilzad accepted to talk to the Taliban about RiV and ceasefire before the launch of intra-Afghan talks.

The release of Taliban prisoners was also discussed during the meeting and both sides agreed that Afghan government and the Taliban would agree on a mechanism over the release of inmates.

Separately, Khalilzad met High Reconciliation Council Head Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in which recent development on peace process were discussed.
