KABUL (Pajhwok): The number of coronavirus-related deaths around the world has reached 324,000, with more than five million individuals infected with the disease, news reports say.
After emerging in the Wuhan city of China last December, the COVID-19 pandemic has spread to at least 200 countries and regions, affecting millions of individuals.
In the initial weeks, mostly Chinese people were infected and killed by the virus, which has now been controlled by Beijing. But the disease is currently spreading rapidly in Europe and America.
Statistics showed on Wednesday over five million people had been infected with the virus worldwide and 324,000 had died from the disease — most of them in Europe and the US.
Data from the Johns Hopkins University in the United States indicate around two million people have recovered from the coronavirus and returned to normal life.
Media reports say 1.55 million individuals have contracted the virus in the US, where over 93,000 have been killed as of Wednesday morning.
Also on Wednesday, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in Kabul said 581 new COVID-19 cases had been registered in Afghanistan, taking the nation’s tally to 7,653.
It added 178 Afghans had so far lost their lives to Covid-19 while 850 others had recovered from the pandemic.
