177 Nangarhar health workers contract Covid-19

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Public health officials in eastern Nangarhar province on Tuesday said their 177 colleagues had contracted Covid-19.

Provincial Public Heath Hospital director and other officials during a joint press conference here urged people to cooperate with them in preventing coronavirus spread in the province.

Ismail Stanekzai, Covid-19 fight in-charge in Nangarhar, on the occasion said 177 health workers had contracted the virus and 40 more were being tested.

He said the infected workers included 86 personnel from the zonal hospital, 40 from Fatima Zuhra clinic, 17 from ICO, nine from prison hospital and 20 workers from district clinics.

He said 269 patients were hospitalized and among them 29 had recovered and returned to normal life while 20 lost their lives to the pandemic in the province.

He said in Nangarhar 835 positive and 362 negative cases had been confirmed among 1,559 suspected patients so far.

Dr. Nasir Ahmad Durrani, Public Health Hospital head, said they had received 150 million afghanis for fighting the Covid-19 in the province.

He said Nangarhar came second after Herat where Covid-19 test hospital was constructed and a 230-bed hospital established.

Currently 68 individuals have been working in the treatment center, 30 in mobile teams, 15 in IOM, UNDP created two mobile teams and another 42 have been hired by UNICEF in the province, according to Dr. Durrani.
