FARAH (Pajhwok): Preempting a Taliban attack, airstrikes killed at least 16 insurgents on the outskirts of this capital city of western Farah province last night, an official said Friday.
The Taliban intended to storm security check posts in the area, said Farah police spokesman Mohibullah Mohib.
He said the airstrikes, based on intelligence reports, targeted the rebels at about 1am last night. Sixteen insurgents were killed and five more wounded.
He said the dead included Qari Zarqawi, a local Taliban commander.
